Prof. Prasanta Kumar Saikia, Commonwealth Fellow
Prof. P.K. Saikia, Ph.D. (Gau), Post Doc. (University of Leeds, UK&USA); Commonwealth Fellow; member IUCN SSC, Stork Ibises & Spoonbill Specialist Group, WI; State coordinator, Asian Waterbird Count, South Asia; Member Wildlife Board of Assam; Member Elephant Task Force; Former Head of Zoology & Dean of Faculty of Science, GU has obtained his Ph.D. degree on the topic- Eco-Biology of Leptoptilosdubius & L. javanicus in Brahmaputra Valley, Assam in 1996. He did International Training Programme on “Wildlife Conservation & management” under the Smithsonian institute, USA & WII, Dehradun. He has been awarded the prestigious Commonwealth fellowship in 2002 for Post. Doc. at University of Leeds, UK. He also did Post Doc. on Marine birds and mammals in Farallon Island of Pacific Ocean, California, in 1997 & and ICF in Wisconsin, USA.
Teaching & Research Contribution
32 years of PG Teaching Experience in GU since 1992 to date & has produced 32 Ph.D. and 3 M.Phil. and above 150 Master’s thesis guided, (both Zoology, & Wildlife Sciences) in wildlife & biodiversity. He has published over 175 Research articles in National & International Journals of repute (including the Journals of Scientific Reports, Molecular Ecology & Evolutionary Biology). He has written over 40 popular scientific articles in various magazines and Newspapers and also attended/presented more than 200 seminars, symposiums, and workshops and delivered speeches as an Invitee in India and abroad. He has also published 7 books & also the member of 14 national learned societies of which 6 are life members.
Conservation Work
Prof. Saikia has started rigorous conservation work on globally-threatened GAS since 1989 in collaboration with IUCN & Assam Forest Department through posters, leaflets, group meetings & tree plantations in various nesting sites. He has initiated Deeporbeel conservation works in 1989 and continued to date.
Innovative work
Two Innovative courses in the Department of Zoology, GU:
- Diploma in Wildlife Management in the year 2009
- M. Sc. in Wildlife Science since 2012, August.
